Calming Corners

A calming corner is a designated, intentionally arranged space designed to provide children with a retreat for self-regulation. The goal is to offer children a place where they can manage stress, process emotions, and develop coping skills.

Start by selecting a quiet, comfortable space within your home, away from distractions. Use soft, inviting materials such as cushions, blankets, or plush rugs to make the area cozy. Introduce calming elements like dimmable lighting or a small lamp to create a soothing ambiance. Consider adding a variety of sensory items, such as stress balls, fidget toys, or textured objects, to engage different senses and provide tactile stimulation. Incorporate visuals that promote relaxation and mindfulness, for instance, calming artwork or posters with simple breathing exercises or positive affirmations.

Ensure the space remains clutter-free, allowing children to focus on calming activities without unnecessary distractions. Consider placing a small bookshelf with age-appropriate books on emotions, coping strategies, or mindfulness to encourage independent exploration and learning. It can be helpful to encourage children to personalize the calming corner with their own touches. Provide drawing materials, journals, or small whiteboards for creative expression.

Introduce children to various coping skills, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, or simple yoga poses, to empower them with tools for emotional regulation. These skills can be modeled and rehearsed regularly within the calming corner. For little ones, sing songs about feelings, play emotions charades, or simply share quiet time together.

It is often best to playfully practice skills when a child is calm, and to build rehearsal into your home routine. Create a daily ritual that suites your life, whether in the morning, after school, or directly before bed. Daily rehearsal will allow a child to more easily access skills when escalated, and ensure that the calming corner remains a positive and effective resource for emotional regulation.
